Updating the nook - the 1.1 firmware upgrade

B&N is rolling out the new firmware update to the nook. This is a big deal. If they can show the ability to fix some of the nook problems with a software update many people will be less afraid of it (thinking it has a hardware flaw). The nook hardware is very solid - the software isn't.

What does it fix? Some user observations from blogs & twitter:

  • No more long "formatting book" when you start reading (YEAH).
  • Read option is gone from book selection in library menu
  • Page numbers have been moved to the bottom of the screen
  • The clock is now in the upper right corner of screen when reading
  • Snappier page turns
  • Faster UI in the color screen

So how do you know if you have the update? Just tap "Settings" in the Home menu. Look for firmware version - if it says 1.0 you need an update! You can try going to my library, and "Check B&N for new content" to force the update. Make sure you are fully charged if you are using the 3G connection.

So what do you think of the update? Hope for the nook yet? :)

The whole page turn thing is tarded and a dumb thing to use as a comparison. All ebook readers are slow. I got 1.1 out of the box with the nook and for what it is, the pages turn quickly enough. Any bitching at this point can only really be directed at the limits of the technology itself, not the devices. Now that publishers are diving in headlong, you are going to see a rapid explosion of innovation. Expect these devices to be leap frogged continuously for the next five years at least. In other words. The nooks we have now will look like dinosaurs compared to the next versions.

That being said, if it suits your needs and you just want to read a book, it may not matter so much

I got mine yesterday so as soon as i turned it on it automatically updated to the latest software so i didn't get to mess with the old software but I find that it works fine, i haven't had any problems with it not responding and i find that the expectations are too high for some people with the page turning. it seems fine to me anyway

yep .. the UI screen does seem very responsive, but have to agree i am not yet sure about the page turn ... i mean it's not "bad" but maybe its the way the screen refreshes ? sees to be just a little drag in it.. i am happy that B&N addressed as much as they could as soon as they could and how easy the update installed and didnt cause any problems.. very seamless

To me the color screen seems a lot snappier, not as sure about a huge difference in page turns.

So the question I have is when is the next one??? :) I'd like to see some improvements in book management.
