The nook is Fat?

Stories are circulating about the nook weighing more than B&N advertised. (See Story Here, this guy HATES the nook). B&N claimed it weighed 11.2 ounces, just one ounce more than the Kindle. I asked the B&N employee at my local store about it and he quickly returned with, "the difference is about the weight of a pack of cigarettes - THINK about it".

Do we have another nook promise broken? Hardly, I think I have found the solution to this grand conspiracy! Some people have overloaded their nooks with huge memory cards loaded with e-books! What did they expect? Clearly if you load a memory card with thousands of e-books your nook will weigh more than it did when you bought it. Come on people!

Ok, seriously now... Many people held a nook before they bought it and under an ounce difference probably isn't a deal breaker for most people. I think the bigger issue here is that users bought the nook with a certain set of expectations. They expected it to match the specs given them, perform well without crashing, have performance comparable to other products, work with lending, have 10 days of battery life, etc.

B&N has admitted the mistake, saying the weight was based on the prototype models and the production model differed slightly in weight (nook site is even updated). The 8% error on the weight of the device is small compared to the other issues with the nook. I'm thankful with the 1.1.1 firmware I can easily read and enjoy books on the nook, but like others I'm waiting for the finished product.

I did the same thing as hamletgo, I went to the store and touched and held the thing! I was mainly interested in if I was ready to make the move from "real" books to "e" books.

The weight is why some people are upset?! If you replaced all the metal inside with lead, it still couldn't possibly weigh more than 50% of its weight.

More important is the dimensional size of the nook, which I relied upon to purchase an accessory made for another eReader, and then found out (after receiving my unit) that the dimensions B&N provided on its spec sheet was only representative of the E-ink display, not the entire unit.

Still, it's a minor consideration overall, relative to other issues with the nook. Some people just don't have enough to worry about...

The funny thing is that I never looked at the numbers for the weight. I just went to B&N and held it in my hand and based it on that.

The weight was perfectly fine. It didn't even cross my mind that the nook was a few ounces heavier than the nook.

Also, whats up with David Pogue having such a grudge against the Nook.
