The nook 1.3 Update Details

nookbrowserYes I have the 1.3 update! Laughing

All I can say is it seems B&N focused on the extras and not the essentials.  I have a chess game, but I still can't go to a specific page number in a book or have a "slider" for navigation.  I just want the basics many other eReaders have. Even iPhone readers can do some of this. What a huge disappointment for me.

My twelve year old thinks B&N is more worried about a checklist comparison to the iPad than making this the most serious e-book reader around. I think he may be right.

General

Scrolling Launcher (like nookdevs but with "new" icons).
Menus slide in/out differently - smoother.
New top level icon for wi-fi (Nice)
New Audio icon, same lame MP3 player.
Single click for Airplane mode.  Nice, but still no way to run just wi-fi.

Web Browser

REQUIRES wi-fi hotspot - no free 3G browsing as I expected.
Better than the web browser with nookdevs.
Pan with the color screen.  Zoom in/out with icons.
The eInk devices just aren't great for this so...

Shop

View Promotion Menu Option.
Collections (Top 100, New Releases, etc.)
Read-in-Store! Yup, read my latest blog entry.

Games

Sudoko. Uses both screens, works pretty well I guess except my LCD stopped working in game and had to restart.
Chess, Seems nice. Dual screen.  eInk is for the big view.

My Library / Reading

No consolidation of B&N and owner content.
Check for new items took minutes for My Documents.
Opening a book speed same or slower based on a few trials.
Page turns faster, and looks different (the way text dissolves).
Text resize seems much faster.
Holding arrow down in book browser goes to last item.
NO New Fonts.
NO go to page number.  Unbelievable.

DOWNLOAD IT HERE ---- IT'S A SLOW DOWNLOAD (note: they have password protected it but keep trying)

Sorry to sound negative. I just don't want the clutter of icons I'll never use. I love the Nook for it's beauty and simplicity. Otherwise I would have just gotten a Kindle, yuck or the Sony. Please B&N, quit making me add things to my Nook I won't use and just make what is right about the Nook better!

The core functionality of the nook itself has been improved and sped up. Its not like windows where the more they add. . . the more it slows down your machine. Page turning, and coverflow are both more responsive.

Organizing your books would be very nice but. . . its not a deal breaker for me.

god!if you dont want to use them dont use them. B&N wont get rid of them for you. people( I'm one of them ) love the new apps! :)

Even better, when I installed 1.3, it stalled at boot up. Called tech support, had me do a soft reboot and it reformatted itself... format c baby. Gone. all content straight back to 1.1, do not pass go. Way to go!

Is it just me, or has battery life been reduced with ver 1.3?

So the 1.3 update implemented IP-adress locking too. Bought a Nook, registered an US-adress, was still able to buy and download books in Germany via WiFi. Since the 1.3 update transactions can not be completed - EVEN ON FREE GOOGLE BOOKS!

I have found that using Calibre to auto-sync RSS feeds of sites that I read on a daily basis to be a great feature that is sadly missing from the native Nook OS functionality. Sometimes, I just want to read what is new on Joel On Software blog for a few minutes, rather than diving into one of my novels. If you have not looked into this yet, I would highly recommend you do so.

Hi, does anyone know if I can go directly from the softrooted 1.2 to the official 1.3 without first downgrading to 1.0.0?

No need - just download the 1.3 root image and install on top.

Hi William. I know, I sound like a silly fussbudget and I know the good things come with it too. I know I'm in the minority about all this cuz most folks are pleased.

I love simplcity. I loved how the 5 icons fit all neat, tidy & perfectly in the window, now they don't. It would be nice if we could have 2 downloads, one for bells & whistles, one for speed, battery life, etc.

Just like you, not being able to organize isn't that important, but to me, I would take that over a browser, games & a few of the other tweaks any day.
