Should you get excited?
Yes, you should! According to the B&N support forums the target is mid April!
"There is an upcoming nook update that will continue to improve nook performance to provide enhanced overall reading experience and in-store connectivity for nook customers to enjoy exclusive content and promotions in Barnes & Noble stores. The date has not been confirmed but we are looking at probably mid-April." (Source)
The main item of interest is support for in-store reading. This is one of the originally touted features of the nook and now about five months later it may happen. If there are updates required in each store (I'd hope not) the rollout may be per market, over time. The forums also indicate feature enhancements and performance increases which will be very welcome.
Maybe this will include an update to the underlying Android OS? The Android OS version was old when the nook shipped, and could benefit from an update as well (Interestingly, the new Alex Reader is based on the same old version).
If you have "rooted" your nook beware - you will want to wait until the nookdevs folks validate the upgrade and provide an alternate download. Maybe B&N will do such a huge update you won't need to root your nook anymore? Probably not yet.
How about the iPad?
I've spent some time with the iPad and while I'm very impressed it won't be replacing my nook. Read my earlier blog on this topic, it's just as relevant as ever.

I ran into this while researching whether to get this or another reader.
B&N sent me this:
"We know that eBook enthusiasts are eager to see more and more titles in
digital form, we invite you to suggest a title or titles by clicking on

As I'm waiting for 2.0 (and an e-ink display that competes with K3) I still haven't decided.
Another is Raymond Feist's Riftwar saga - the first 3/4 are not available, but all the others seem to be.
I'd love to be able to make requests as I'd like to convert some of my physical library to my nook, but I have no idea who to contact.
I agree that is one of the awesome benefits - IF i could connect in-store most of the time. I can't. The networks at many BN stores seem to be overwhelmed, now that they have gone to free wi-fi. The store manager at a BN agreed yesterday, saying they will have to wait for an AT&T upgrade and that they should have done the upgrades prior to new Nook rollouts.
I am hoping that the update adds some functionality (e.g. calendar, orientation view and overall stability).
I enjoy ebooks as well as newspapers from Paperdisplay.
1. The Searching Dictionary
3. Text to Speech
2, The Browser
3. Support non Western fonts in Epub files. ( Epub can't read Vietnamese)
4. Go to pages and links option
5. Change orientation view
6. Word of the day on The Daily
7. Ability to download free ebooks without setup credit card on account.
Thank you for reading my suggestions.:smileyhappy:
Anyway I don´t plan to buy the iPAD in the short term. My excuse is not having a mouse and mainly the additional of external memory (flash, SD, USB hard disk, etc). I guess though,a sliding finger can replace a mouse.
