B&N has New Applications Coming to nook?

I found this job opening B&N has for a Java developer to write Android applications for the nook.  Interesting eh?

Deals?

Some fun stuff this week:

articlesPrices!

Prices are really a bit nuts and changing rapidly. You don't have to go far in the forums or blogs to see people say the books on their wish-lists just went up! Clearly people think e-books should be cheaper than the general price of any paper book. nook users don't want to pay $12 for an e-book that's available is mass paperback for $5.99 at any bookstore. Unfortunately right at the emergence of e-readers (look at the choices!) the publishers and bookstores are having a complete shift in e-book pricing and profit sharing.

My advice is watch for the deals and buy quick. Try out your local library.  Don't be afraid to buy a real book if that's the only cheap way to get a title (yeah, that idea doesn't sit well with my nook either!)

Eventually this will all shake out. After publishers figure out the Pad isn't going to let them gouge consumers they may be ready to use some common sense pricing and profit sharing.

e-Sales UP at B&N?

Marketwatch B&N Report

Barnes & Noble.com sales increased 32% to $210 million for the quarter, as compared to the prior year. Most notably, Barnes & Noble.com's sales accelerated throughout the quarter, increasing 67% year-over-year for the month of January.

"nook(TM) began shipping only in the middle of the third quarter, and, as evident in our sales, we are thrilled with how customers have embraced our product and our digital eBook platform," said Steve Riggio, chief executive officer of Barnes & Noble, Inc. "In addition to the accelerating online sales trends, nook(TM) sales have been strong at our bookstores since the product became available earlier this month."

They didn't call out the e-book and e-reader portion of online sales in the article, that would be interesting!

Would seem to be pretty easy to get the publishers to drop the prices. Don't buy books priced more than $9.99 say. I have paid for a few books up to $17.50 at Fictionwise for instance. But I was also getting 100% rebate and I used that to buy titles from $0.40 to $3-4 range. I have also found a bunch of awesome titles at Gutenberg Project and Feedbooks, both super sites. If we just don't pay over the $9.99 they will get the message at some point.
