Stories are circulating about the nook weighing more than B&N advertised. (See Story Here, this guy HATES the nook). B&N claimed it weighed 11.2 ounces, just one ounce more than the Kindle. I asked the B&N employee at my local store about it and he quickly returned with, "the difference is about the weight of a pack of cigarettes - THINK about it".

Do we have another nook promise broken? Hardly, I think I have found the solution to this grand conspiracy! Some people have overloaded their nooks with huge memory cards loaded with e-books! What did they expect? Clearly if you load a memory card with thousands of e-books your nook will weigh more than it did when you bought it. Come on people!

Ok, seriously now... Many people held a nook before they bought it and under an ounce difference probably isn't a deal breaker for most people. I think the bigger issue here is that users bought the nook with a certain set of expectations. They expected it to match the specs given them, perform well without crashing, have performance comparable to other products, work with lending, have 10 days of battery life, etc.

B&N has admitted the mistake, saying the weight was based on the prototype models and the production model differed slightly in weight (nook site is even updated). The 8% error on the weight of the device is small compared to the other issues with the nook. I'm thankful with the 1.1.1 firmware I can easily read and enjoy books on the nook, but like others I'm waiting for the finished product.

Cases hold the nook in place and generally and you keep them on while you read. A sleeve is generally used to slide the nook into it when you aren't using it. I like the feel of the nook in my hand while I read - if that is important to you, consider a sleeve. JAVOedge sells several cases and sleeves for the nook. A few weeks back they had a special on Amazon for these sleeves for $9.99 shipped, $10 off! How could I resist!?

A couple of the JAVOedge sleeves have a wood-grain appearance that they claim has a "natural, warm appeal of hardwood without chopping a single tree". Well, it's a decent material that seems to hold up, but I don't think anyone is going to think I have a hardwood case for my nook! It's pretty slim and lightweight. One thing I really like about it is the snug, padded fit for your nook. I don't feel like it is going to "slip out". I'm notorious for that sort of thing, but I still pay attention to how I carry it. There is no snap-on loop at the top of the sleeve to prevent it from coming out.

In addition the interior of the case is lined with a soft material to prevent scratches. I was concerned that grabbing the case could make the inside touch it, scratching the screen. I have to confess when I opened the box I had no idea what the pullout tab was for. It contracts when you put the nook in the sleeve and then you pull it the nook partially "ejects". This is actually important because you don't have to pull the nook out with your fingers, smudging the screen in the process.

Another thing I really like about the product is that it doesn't attract a lot of attention. It's simple, easy to use, and I feel like my nook is better protected. I don't think this sleeve will protect my nook if dropped. Sure, it might give a bit of cushion to the edges, but if that's what you want, this probably isn't the product for you.

Why add memory to your nook? If you want to store a large number of books beyond the internal memory you have a lot more books than I do!  Many people want to store pictures, audio books, and music on the nook, and the best place for those is on an additional memory card.  The speed of the card you purchase matters!  I'd recommend a class 6 or 8 Micro SDHC card. Let's get started.

NookColor

The nookColor is quite easy to add memory.  There is a small flap to pull down in the corner of your nook that has the little hook on it. Simply slide your memory card in and push the flap back in place. Your new memory should appear available for storage.

Remove Back Case & Position Card Holder

Turn OFF your nook by holding the off button for several seconds. Carefully remove the back cover (pull the clip up at the bottom of the nook and slowly pry it off). I'd read the instructions on page twenty-five from the manual if you haven't done it yet!

Locate the words, “Micro SD” on the page of your nook. There is a small metal holder that slides up and down by pushing it with your finger. Push it up toward the words “Micro SD”.  You should feel it click into place.

After you push it up it should look like this:

Pull up Card Case

Place your fingernail (do not use a metal device) under the bottom of the metal cage and pop or pivot it up.

After you have done this correctly it should look like this:

Insert the Card, Close and Lock Lid

The card should fit neatly into the holder with the straight side of the memory card on the left. The metal connectors on the card should be face down.

After inserting the card make sure you push the metal housing back down until it clicks into place.

You're Done!

Put the case back on, starting at the bottom with the nook face down on a flat surface. I would follow the directions in the nook guide to be sure. I found it simple, but don't press hard on it, especially in the middle.

Now when you plug-in your nook an extra device will appear for you to store content on!
