Public Libraries with ebook access... 1 Year, 11 Months ago Karma: 0
In the process of trying to figure out how to download MP3 books to my Nook from my public library, I ran across this website www.overdrive.com/partners/libraries.asp

They have a list by zip codes of public libraries that are hooked into their Overdrive system that have ebooks/mp3 books, etc (you have to download their free Overdrive software). My understanding is that you can sideload some of these books (although I haven't tried an ebook yet). It looks like now most libraries make anyone in any location of their state eligible for their library cards. Like for LA County library, you now just have to have id showing you live in the State of California, instead of in the County itself as it used to be.

If you can't find a library in your area, I believe I read that out of state patrons can buy an annual membership for $15 to the Philadelphia Public Library and so can then download their ebooks free.

I've only downloaded an MP3 book so far and only as far as to my desktop. I'll try to sideload it later and see how that works.

Maybe this is common knowledge that just wasn't common knowledge to me...sorry if I'm repeating something already well-known in Nook circles!

I live in Oklahoma City and my library uses Overdrive. I actually only got a library card just so I can use their online system. It's pretty awesome. They have newer books which is great. I've been getting 90% of my books through the library since I'm not one who rereads books very often.
The system is super easy to use. You just need to download Adobe Digital Editions to manage the books between the library and your Nook.
I've not downloaded any of the audiobooks yet because I don't want to hassle with formatting them to MP3 from that funky format my library puts them in.
You can't beat free!

Just wanted to confirm - Overdrive books load very easily onto the nook... I'm very pleased! Free ebooks from the library, fresh to my ereader.

Also, I wanted to add that the New York Public Library (the Manhattan one) offers a free library membership to anyone living in NY State. They have a pretty extensive ebook (and audiobook) collection and I've been borrowing a number of ebooks to read on my nook. Just finished Neil Gaiman's "The Graveyard Book" and Naomi Novik's "Black Powder War." Just google "NYPL ebooks"
